The Memorial Illumination at Antietam
Each year on the anniversary of the Battle of Antietam, an memorial illumination commemorates the lives lost in the battle that day. The public is welcome to volunteer to take part in placing the luminaries and lighting them as dusk approaches. At the sun sets 23,110 luminaries are lit, one for each soldier killed, wounded or missing. The 5 mile driving tour opens at 6 pm and ends at midnight.
